Saint Laurentius church and vicinity in Ename around 1500

The beginning of the 16th century is a prosperous time and the medieval village is at its largest – about 70 farms – grouped around the two common meadows or village greens in the centre. The cattle is brought together in the village green, in the evening to be milked and watered and at night to keep the cattle away from the arable land. The village green is also the space for all communal activities and amenities. On Saint Laurentius day (10 August) the village greens are used to hold the annual fair.
