In 1063, a Benedictine abbey is founded in Ename that owns the village and its Saint Laurentius church. As the former Ottonian church is too large for a small community of farmers, the church is being transformed into a pilgrims’ church, with altars for several saints in the side aisles. A ditch around the church marks the holy ground on which any aggression or commercial activities were forbidden.
